Iran to tell EU you don’t have six months to find alternative oil

Iran is about to call the EUs bluff on its recently passed oil sanctions.

Deputy head of the Iranian Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Hossein Ebrahimi said on Friday that Iranian lawmakers would debate a “double-urgency” bill on Sunday which calls for the ban of oil exports to Europe as early as next week.

The move comes after EU foreign ministers reached an agreement in Brussels on Monday to impose sanctions on oil imports from Iran as of July 1. The sanctions involve an immediate ban on all new oil contracts with the Islamic Republic and freezing the assets of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) within the EU.

The Majlis motion would deny Europe the six-month phase-in period that the bloc has considered to adjust and find alternative sources to Iran’s crude.

The recent EU sanctions on Iranian oil are merely a “psychological warfare,” as the 27-member bloc is delaying the implementation of the embargoes under various pretexts, Ebrahimi added.

The EU accounted for 18 percent of Iranian crude oil sales in the first half of 2011, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), making it Iran’s second biggest customer after China.

The EU oil sanctions came after US President Barack Obama signed into law fresh unilateral economic embargoes against the Central Bank of Iran on New Year’s Eve in an apparent bid to punish foreign companies and banks that do business with the Iranian financial institution. That bill ultimately takes aim at Iran’s oil revenue.

So my advice to Cameron would be this. Think long and hard about the billions you are about to commit to propping up a dead duck Eurozone, because you are going to need it propping up the UK oil supplies. There is about to be a massive increase in price and a scramble to find supplies.

If there is one thing that will get the people out onto the streets will be a lack of oil. No petrol or fuel oil just as the winter weather is about to blast across the UK may be enough to kick off a real revolt.

Joint US-Israel exercise postponed until later in 2012

The United States and Israel agreed to postpone a large joint military exercise from this spring to late in the year to avoid aggravating an already tense regional situation driven by conflicts with Iran, Israeli media reported Sunday.

The drill, slated for May and named "Austere Challenge," was announced in November by Andrew Shapiro, U.S. assistant secretary of State for politics-military affairs, at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. The exercise as originally planned would include more than 5,000 U.S. and Israeli forces and, among other things, simulate Israel’s ballistic missile defense. It would be the "largest and most significant joint exercise in the allies’ history," Shapiro had said.

The drill was announced shortly after American military officials reportedly expressed concern that Israel was preparing an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities and would not warn them in advance. Although American and U.S. officials are in close contact on defense matters, especially regarding Iran’s disputed nuclear program, Jerusalem and Washington are at odds over how aggressively to approach with the issue.

U.S. Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is scheduled to arrive in Israel this week for talks with his Israeli counterpart, Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz. Dempsey may also meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Talk of a military strike against Iran to stop its nuclear program continues to buzz, adding to tensions surrounding recent developments that include the assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist last week in Tehran. Iranian officials, who maintain that their nuclear research is intended for peaceful purposes, accused Israel and the U.S. of responsibility for the attack. Both denied involvement.

Who knows what is really going on here. Guess we better just keep an eye on movements rather than rely on the official channels.

Saudi, French warplanes crash in joint drill

RIYADH, Jan 14 (KUNA) — A French Mirage and a Saudi F-15 collided in midair Saturday during joint exercise in Tabuk Region, said the Ministry of Defense.

The accident took place at midday and the Saudi pilot and the two pilots of the French aircraft managed to eject safely, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted a statement by the ministry as saying.

The three pilots have been evacuated to command of the northern military sector of Tabuk Region while the drill between the Royal Saudi Air Force and the French Air Force is going on.

The military command started a probe to determine the circumstances of the incident, according to the statement.

3rd Nimitz class carrier on route to Gulf

Following the arrival of the USS Carl Vinson in the Arabian Sea on Monday to replace the outgoing USS John C. Stennis carrier strike group, it is now reported that a 3rd Carrier Strike group is on route to the Gulf area.

The Stennis was due to return to its home port in San Diego but the Pentagon did not say when that would happen.

Another carrier strike group, led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), concluded a port visit to Thailand on Tuesday and was now in the Indian Ocean. It is on track to join the USS Carl Vinson in the Central Command (5th Fleet AOR) area of operations, which begins in the neighbouring Arabian Sea.

USS Carl Vinson successfully transits Straight of Hormuz

I understand that the USS Carl Vinson and Strike Group One has now successfully transited the Straight of Hormuz and is sailing in the Persian Gulf, which the USS Stennis declined to do last week after being warned to ‘back off’ by the Iranian navy chiefs.

The USS Stennis is now reported to be in the Arabian Sea, and possibly about to return to the US as part of the usual rotational programme.

In the Gulf of Aden/Red Sea that rotation can be seen with the USS Battan amphibian copter carrier being replaced by the USS Makin Island group.

Whether this is really just rotational deployment or strategic repositioning will become clear over the next few days.

Iranian thinking seems to be that if the US continues to lean on European and Asian governments for an embargo on Iranian oil, "not a single drop" of Saudi or Gulf oil will pass through the Strait of Hormuz, say Iranian officials, thus pitting an Iranian blockade against a Western-led oil embargo.

Washington appears to believe that Iran’s threat to close the Straight of Hormuz is more rhetoric than event led, and will probably be looking to create as much economic instability as possible rather than looking for a direct military clash. Partial action will be enough to trigger a major spike in world oil prices, send insurance rates for oil tankers sky high and bring the world’s energy markets under intolerable pressure.

The US has made clear that it is resolved to bring all its naval and air power to bear on ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open.

The Game of Chess continues as the war of words and the repositioning of strategic assets continues. However, we do note that few chess games end in a draw, there is usually a loser at some stage and how many pieces remain on the board is entirely in the hands of the players. We can only remain part of the audience.

Middle East chess game, who will blink first

The International Chess game that is going on in and around the Straight of Hormuz has taken a few more dramatic turns over the past 24-48 hours.

Yesterday I posted on the disposition of the Fleets of the main players.

The US 5th Fleet Carrier USS CVN-74 John Stennis and her associated Battle Group is now in or very close to the Straights of Hormuz, ignoring the warnings given last week by the head of the Iranian Navy for the US ships to back off.

Close by, both in the Gulf of Oman and on patrol in the Arabian Sea is the Royal Navy, with the news that HMS Daring has been dispatched to join the ships already there. As part of the same operational group under the command of the EU is a range of German, Dutch, Italian and French warships stretching from the Gulf of Oman to the Gulf of Aden and off the Somalian coast as part of the anti piracy patrols.

In the Mediterranean Sea, a Russian Battle group led by the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov which carries 47 warplanes (mostly Su-33) and 10 helicopters,

accompanied by the guided missile destroyer Admiral Chabanenko have arrived at the Russian Naval Base in the Syrian port of Tartus.

Whilst many pundits are saying that this is in support of President Assad, I tend to feel that it is the placing of another chess piece on the ‘wrong’ side of Israel in support of the Iranian regime. It must be remembered that the Iranian navy sent their own ships, the Alvand – thought to be a British-built Vosper Mark 5 class frigate – and a supply vessel, the Kharg, also British-built, to Tartus in February last year. (I have not seen any reports anywhere that they returned).

This would most definitely place these Russian ships within easy striking distance of Israel should Russia decide to support Iran in any armed conflict that may erupt.

As if to provoke the situation even further, less than a week after the ending of Iranian Navy exercises lasting 10 days, Iran is planning new military exercises near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, this time using the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s naval branch. The Fars news agency last Thursday quoted the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s naval commander, Adm. Ali Fadavi, as saying that the upcoming exercise would be the seventh staging of an annual drill called "The Great Prophet."

Against this backdrop, planned for the same time is a joint US/Israeli exercise. The Jerusalem Post quotes US Commander Lt.-Gen Frank Gorenc as saying the drill is not just an “exercise” but also a “deployment” that will involve “several thousand American soldiers” heading to Israel. Additionally, new command posts will be established by American forces in Israel and that country’s own IDF army will begin working from a base in Germany.

U.S. European Command (EUCOM) has already deployed to Israel a high-powered X-band radar and the supporting people and equipment needed for coordinated defence against Iranian missile attack, marking the first permanent U.S. military presence on Israeli soil, which was put in place last September.

Under the Austere Challenge 12 drill scheduled for an undisclosed time during the next few weeks, the Israeli military will together with America host the largest-ever joint missile drill by the two countries. Following the installation of American troops near Iran’s neighbouring Strait of Hormuz and the reinforcing of nearby nations with US weapons, Tehran authorities are considering this not a test but the start of something much bigger.

In the testing, America’s Theater High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, missile system will be operating alongside its ship-based Aegis system and Israel’s own program to work with Arrow, Patriot and Iron Drone missiles.

America previously equipping Saudi Arabia with nearly $30 billion F-15 of war planes, and the United Arab Emirates with advanced “bunker buster” bombs and other weaponry to wreck any chance of an Iranian nuclear weapon program from close by, the US will now have added forces on the ready in Israel and Germany.

And turning the screw and raising the ante even more, Iran has announced the sentencing of a former U.S. Marine to death on charges of spying for the CIA, Iranian state media reported Monday.

Iran‘s Revolutionary Court found 28-year-old Amir Hekmati "Corrupt on Earth," said the Fars news agency, and sentenced him to death "for cooperating with the hostile country . . . and spying for the CIA." Under Iranian law, Hekmati has 20 days to appeal.

His trial and death sentence came as Iran announced that it had enriched uranium at an underground facility, which was confirmed by the IAEA.

"The IAEA can confirm that Iran has started the production of uranium enriched up to 20 percent using IR-1 centrifuges in the Fordo Fuel Enrichment Plant," the agency said in a statement. However, IAEA Spokeswoman Gill Tudor said that all nuclear materials and operations in the Fordo facility are “under the Agency’s containment and surveillance."

Is this the tipping point that the US has been waiting for? We will probably never know what this spat is really about, oil, ideology or just payback time for the US Embassy hostage crisis and failed rescue attempt during Carter’s time.

Although as ZeroHedge commented, If at this point anyone is missing the parallels to 2003, we suggest getting bigger glasses. Our prediction is that within 2 years Ahmedinejad will be found by the US Army deep in some foxhole, to make the Iraq replica complete.

Our only hope is that by then the entire Middle East is not covered in radioactive glass.

Is this about Oil or Skyfairies?

American, British, Israeli and Iranian Warships Sailing Towards Confrontation.

The U.S. and Israel are conducting their largest-ever joint warfare exercises near Iran. And see this.

England is sending its most advanced ship – the HMS Daring – to the region.

Only days after finishing its last war games in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran has announced another set of wargames in February.

Russia’s state-owned Itar-Tass news agency quoted a source from the Russian Navy as saying that “It is planned that the port of Tartus (Syria) will be visited by a big anti-submarine ship of the Northern Fleet ‘Admiral Chabanenko’ and an escort ship ‘Yaroslav Mudry’.”

Is Iran upping the ante?

I have always maintained that problems only really become problems when people make them so, until then they are just resolvable issues, none more so than in the world of diplomacy and military posturing. So as the western world winds down as it begins its Christmas celebrations, is one of the spiritual homes of the religion of peace is seeing just how far it can push the limits of a resolvable issue.

Iran is launching a “massive” 10 day war games naval exercise.

Iran military says it shot down US drone – will retaliate

Iran’s military has shot down a US reconnaissance drone aircraft in eastern Iran and has threatened to respond to the violation of Iranian airspace, a military source told state television on Sunday.

“Iran’s military has downed an intruding RQ-170 American drone in eastern Iran,” Iran’s Arabic-language Al Alam state television network quoted the unnamed source as saying.

“The Iranian military’s response to the American spy drone’s violation of our airspace will not be limited to Iran’s borders,” the military source said, without elaborating.
